# Collate > Collate is a local-first macOS workspace for chatting with, summarizing, organizing, and citing PDFs. Collate helps people understand PDFs while retaining control over where AI processing happens. In Local AI mode, prompts and document content are processed by Collate's local runtime and are not sent to a cloud model provider for inference. Optional cloud AI and other networked features contact the services described in the privacy policy when the user chooses to use them.
